Find out more about correct daily skincare regimes for Dry Skin & Dehydrated Skin
Each of us is different, so is our skin. Different skin types require different skin regimes so is important to know how to look after your skin properly.
From a cosmetic point of view, the skin is classified according to several factors related to its balance: sebaceous secretion, hydration and sensitivity level. Thus, each type of skin will have its own characteristics and require different cares. The type of skin is determined by genetics, although it will also be affected by other factors and can change with time.
Kalahari Lifestyle Skin classification looks at overall skin health and group skin types into 5 groups:
  • Mature Skin
  • Premature Ageing Skin
  • Dry & Dehydrated Skin
  • Sensitive & Sensitised Skin
  • Problematic Skin

Dry & Dehydrated Skin

Dry skin is a very common skin condition characterised by a lack of the appropriate amount of water in the most superficial layer of the skin, the epidermis. Dry skin is a specific condition which occurs when the sebaceous glands are completely inactive or the natural excretes of sebum is minimal. While dry skin tends to affect males and females equally, older individuals are typically much more prone to dry skin.

Environmental factors, such as weather (humidity, temperature), have a profound effect on the amount of water retained within the skin. Certain diseases also can significantly affect your skin. Potential causes of dry skin include:

  • Weather – For example, cold, dry air when heated by a furnace will produce dry skin by evaporating hydration on the skin. Often hand-washing and usage of sanitiser can cause evaporation and dryness. Dry skin may also be a side effect of some medications as well as a byproduct of certain skin diseases.
  • Other skin conditions – People with skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (eczema) or psoriasis are prone to dry skin.
  • Harsh soaps and detergents – Many popular soaps, detergents and shampoos strip moisture from your skin as they are formulated to remove oil.
  • Heat – For example, cold, dry air when heated by a furnace will produce dry skin by evaporating moisture on the skin. Central heating and fireplaces all reduce humidity and dry your skin.

Signs and symptoms of dry skin depend on a few different factors: your age, your health, where you live, time spent outdoors and the cause of the problem. Dry skin is likely to cause one or more of the following:

  • Fine lines or cracks
  • Gray, ashy skin
  • Redness
  • Skin that feels and looks rough
  • Itching (pruritus)
  • Slight to severe flaking, scaling or peeling

The epidermis (the outermost of the three layers that make up the skin, the inner layers being the dermis and hypodermis) is usually composed of fat (lipid) and protein. Specific epidermal proteins together with lipid portion of the top layer of our skin help prevent skin dehydration. When there is not enough proteins and lipids, the skin loses its moisture due to evaporation.

As skin becomes dry, it also may become more sensitive and prone to rashes and skin breakdown.
