Find out more about correct daily skincare regime for Hyperpigmentation.

Each of us is different, so is our skin. Different skin types require different skin regime so is important to know how to look after your skin properly.

From a cosmetic point of view, the skin is classified according to several factors related to its balance: sebaceous secretion, hydration and sensitivity level. Thus, each type of skin will have its own characteristics and require different care. The type of skin is determined by genetics, although it will also be affected by other factors and can change with time.

Kalahari Lifestyle Skin classification looks at overall skin health and group skin types into 5 groups:

  • Mature Skin
  • Premature Ageing Skin
  • Dry & Dehydrated Skin
  • Sensitive Skin
  • Hyperpigmented Skin
  • Problematic Skin

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation can be explained in three different categories: Solar-induced hyperpigmentation, hormonal imbalance such as melasma (common after pregnancy) and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (usually caused by acne). Hyperpigmentation is the name that healthcare professionals give to patches of skin that become darker than surrounding areas of skin.

Hyperpigmentation occurs when the skin produces more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. This can make spots or patches of skin appear darker than surrounding areas. Some forms of hyperpigmentation, including melasma and sun spots, are more likely to affect areas of skin that face sun exposure, including the face, arms, and legs.

Other types of hyperpigmentation form after an injury or skin inflammation, such as cuts, burns, acne, or lupus. These can occur anywhere on the body.

How to get rid of hyperpigmentation

Although hyperpigmentation is harmless, we all want our skin to have uneven skin tone.  There are a range of possible methods and home remedies that we recommend.

To prevent hyperpigmentation or to stop it becoming more prominent:

  • Avoid exposure to the sun. Use a sunscreen with an SPF (Try Kalahari SF) to protect the skin and stop hyperpigmentation from becoming darker.
  • Avoid picking at the skin. To prevent hyperpigmentation from forming after an injury, avoid picking at spots, scabs, and acne.

Kalahari has developed a highly effective dual treatment approach with a combination of innovative ingredients. Bearberry extract inhibits production of melanin and Carob leaf extract reduces tyrosinase activity. The Skin Brightening Gel also contains Salicylic acid which exfoliates the pore lining and Devils Claw extract which dramatically reduces inflammation. We recommend Kalahari Professional Phytic Clay Mask in combination with the prescribed home-care treatment protocol for visible results.
