Find out more about correct daily skincare regime for Problematic Skin / Acne blemish-prone skin
Each of us is different, so is our skin. Different skin types require different skin regimes so is important to know how to look after your skin properly.
From a cosmetic point of view, the skin is classified according to several factors related to its balance: sebaceous secretion, hydration and sensitivity level. Thus, each type of skin will have its own characteristics and require different care approaches. The type of skin is determined by genetics, although it will also be affected by other factors and can change with time.
Kalahari Lifestyle Skin classification looks at overall skin health and group skin types into 5 groups:
  • Mature Skin
  • Premature Ageing Skin
  • Dry & Dehydrated Skin
  • Sensitive & Sensitised Skin
  • Hyperpigmentated Skin

Problematic Skin | Acne & Blemish-prone Skin

Acne occurs when a pore or hair follicle becomes clogged with natural sebum and dead skin cells. Problematic skin is a non-contagious skin condition characterised by pimples caused by inflamed and infected sebaceous glands. Blemish-prone skin is skin that has a potential to develop comedones and pimples. It is often oily and appears shiny. This is because the sebaceous glands produce more sebum than in other skin types.

Bacteria – known as Propionibacterium – lives in the skin. When this bacteria enters and infects the clogged pores, it causes inflammation. There are different types of acne: Non-inflammatory acne such as whiteheads (closed comedones) and blackheads (open comedones). Inflammatory acne types such as papules, pustules (pimples), nodules and cysts.

Acne typically appears on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back and ranges in serverity from light through moderate to severe Acne.

Understanding Problematic Skin | Acne Blemish-prone Skin

Genetics, hormones, incorrect use of skincare products, hygiene, stress, sleep patterns, medication, sun exposure or smoking are the main factors that affect the acne.

Ignoring the correct skincare regime designed for acne, problematic skin may lead do acne scarring. Acne scarring is formed as a result of inflammatory or cystic acne. The pore or follicle swells due to the accumulation of excess oil, impurities and bacteria which forces the follicle wall to break. There are also different types of acne scarring: Ice Pick Scars (deep pits), Boxcar Scars (angular scars – which normally occur on the temple and cheeks), Rolling Scars (wave-like appearance) and Hypertrophic (thickened) scars.
