The Correct Order of Morning Skincare Routine

To achieve optimal skin care results, it’s crucial to understand the proper order of skin care products. With various product types, it can be confusing to know their function and when to apply them. Remember that morning and nighttime routines may differ. To make it easier, our skin expert Vanessa created a recommended routine for radiant skin.

The Order of Your Skin Care Matters

Following the right sequence while using skin care products ensures the maximum effectiveness of each product. The arrangement of application is crucial as skin acts as a barrier and only a limited amount of ingredients can penetrate it. Incorrect application order can hinder the full potential of your skin care routine.

Simplify Your Skin Care Routine

The timing of product application is important in a skin care routine, but it’s not always feasible. To avoid making your routine too complicated, our recommendation – keep it simple.

Many products require a wait of 5 to 30 minutes before the next step for proper absorption, but who has time for that? If you make it too complex, you won’t stick to it.

To still allow for product absorption, we recommend to pausing for a minute between steps and allowing products time to react with the skin. For example, after washing the face and applying serum or treatment, wait a few minutes before applying a face moisturiser.

Most importantly, listen to your skin and find what works for you. Everyone’s skin is unique and what works for others may not work for you. Be gentle and kind to your skin.

How to Apply Skin Care Products in the Right Order

To achieve the best results, follow the rule of applying products from thinnest to thickest or from liquid to cream. This allows for proper penetration of important ingredients in serums (e.g. antioxidants) into the skin, while finishing with moisturizers (e.g. emollients, humectants) that sit on top of the skin.

Thin-to-thick is the general rule, but consider the ingredients and their intended purpose.

Your Morning Skin Care Routine: A Step-by-Step Guide

In the morning, the focus is on protecting your skin from the sun, pollution, and the elements. It is recommended to avoid using peel pads and treatment products like retinol and instead follow these steps.

Step 1

Cleanser is the first step of any skincare routine and it is crucial for maintaining healthy and radiant skin. Cleansing your face removes dirt, oil, and impurities that accumulate on your skin throughout the day. This step prepares your skin for the subsequent skincare products that you will use, allowing them to penetrate deeper and work more effectively.

To start, splashing your face with warm water can help to open up your pores and remove any surface-level dirt. However, if you have a specific skin concern or if you wear makeup, using a gentle cleanser is the way to go. There are various types of cleansers available, each designed for a different skin type such as oily, dry, or sensitive skin. It’s important to choose the right one for you, as using a harsh cleanser can strip your skin of its natural oils and cause irritation.

Incorporating a cleanser into your routine is a simple yet effective way to promote healthy skin. By removing impurities and preparing your skin for the next steps, you’ll be able to achieve your desired skin goals and maintain a glowing complexion.

Step 2:

Toner – when it comes to skincare, toners have evolved from simply being an astringent that removes any excess dirt or makeup from your skin to a multifaceted product that serves various purposes. Modern toners can contain antioxidants and vitamin-B derivatives, which can help to restore the skin’s natural pH balance, improve its texture and overall appearance.

Choosing the right toner for your skin type is crucial, as different toners contain different ingredients that cater to various skin needs. For instance, if you have oily skin, you may want to look for a toner that contains salicylic acid or witch hazel to help unclog your pores and regulate oil production. If you have dry skin, you may want to look for a toner that contains hydrating ingredients like glycerin or hyaluronic acid, which can help to plump up the skin and improve its texture.

However, if your skin is already looking and feeling fine without using a toner, then don’t feel like you have to add this step to your routine. Every person’s skin is unique, and while toners can be beneficial for some, they may not be necessary for others. So, always listen to your skin and adjust your skincare routine based on what your skin needs.

Step 3

Antioxidant Serum – Serums are powerful treatments that are designed to tackle specific skin concerns. During the day, it’s important to use an antioxidant serum to defend against UV harm and environmental pollutants. Antioxidant serums are packed with ingredients that protect your skin from free radicals, which can cause damage and lead to premature aging. By using an antioxidant serum, you’re not only helping to prevent future damage but also providing your skin with essential nutrients to keep it healthy and glowing.

Step 4

Eye Cream – The delicate skin around your eyes is one of the first areas to show signs of aging. To maintain the health and thickness of this area, it’s recommended to apply an eye cream at least once a day, preferably twice, starting in your 20s. Eye creams are specially formulated to hydrate and protect the skin around your eyes, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. To provide additional protection, wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from harmful UV rays and environmental stressors.

Step 5

Spot Treatment – Acne spot treatments are a great way to target specific areas of concern. It’s important to apply the treatment directly to the affected area for maximum benefits. Follow the product instructions carefully or consult a dermatologist for proper application. By using an acne spot treatment, you can help to reduce inflammation and redness while promoting healing.

Step 6

Moisturizer – Regardless of your skin type, everyone needs a moisturizer to keep their skin hydrated and protected from damage. It’s best to apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp, as this helps to lock in moisture. However, be sure to avoid areas treated with acne spot treatments. Using a moisturizer regularly can help to prevent dryness, flakiness, and irritation, leaving your skin looking healthy and glowing.

Step 7

Sunscreen – Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is essential for maintaining its health and appearance. If you’re using a physical or mineral sunscreen, which blocks UV rays, apply it last in your daytime skincare routine. However, if you’re using a chemical sunscreen, which must be absorbed for effectiveness, applying it after moisturizer can hinder absorption.
To counter this, use a physical sunscreen with zinc after moisturizer, as zinc offers broad UVA and UVB protection. For chemical sunscreen users, opt for a formula that moisturizes to hydrate the skin while protecting it.

By following these steps, you can help to protect your skin from skin damage and maintain its health and appearance.
