Pregnancy is an amazing time, but it usually comes with many skincare challenges. As soon as you get pregnant, your body starts changing. When you find out you’re expecting, your whole world changes. And that might include your daily skincare routine too.

Tummy Skin Changes During Pregnancy

We all talk a lot about the tummy growing during pregnancy, it is actually your uterus that is expanding in size to allow for your baby’s development—not the stomach. Skin is our largest organ and as a living organ will expand around the uterus during pregnancy. As this happens, there are areas of the tummy that can stretch, and depending on a person’s genetics and their skin’s ability to accommodate this change, this can lead to stretch marks. The amount of skin stretching experienced during this period will vary from one person to another. As this weight gain occurs, your skin will stretch to accommodate, potentially leading to the development of stretch marks.

Many also notice a darkened line in the middle of the belly, known as a linea nigra, as pregnancy progresses. It is important to note, that much like the other changes that occur in pregnancy, this line can last postpartum, often for up to a year or more.

Tummy Skincare During Pregnancy

“Gentle” is the keyword when it comes to skincare during pregnancy. It’s important to use products that include ingredients that are safe for you and your baby.

Make sure they’re using plant-based ingredients and are avoiding products that contain retinoids, acids and products containing fragrances and essential oils such as bath bombs and scented lotions.

Recommended Ingredients:

Wheatgerm Oil

Wheat germ oil is an incredibly natural oil that is high in vitamin E. The concentration of Vitamin E in Wheatgerm Oil is one of the highest concentrations you can get. Vitamin E comes with a lot of benefits. It has the amazing free radical-fighting power of an antioxidant. Antioxidants fight free radicals caused by the environment like the sun, and pollution and help skin repair itself. During pregnancy, you can expect skin dryness. Wheat germ oil also contains vitamins A and D that heal and nourish, helping to smooth over any scars or cracking from dryness. Wheatgerm Oil contains as well fatty acids that create a barrier that locks in moisture.
They work with linoleic and linolenic acid to sink into the skin, fast, and get that barrier in place so you feel hydrated all day.

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

This amazing natural oil is renowned for its mood enhancing, sedative, antidepressant, beautifying and aphrodisiac properties. It is beneficial for the immune system, cardiovascular system and endocrine system, relaxing the body while liberating the mind of negative emotions.
Ylang Ylang is a soothing scent. It helps to rest, comfort and sleep. It increases blood pressure circulation and prevents the sign of ageing on your skin.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is an amazing moisturiser. Cocoa butter is high in antioxidants, which help fight off free-radical damage. Protecting your skin during pregnancy from free-radical damage is crucial to keep it healthy and youthful-looking. Cocoa butter is also an anti-inflammatory—just another way it helps your skin be protected.

The regular use of cocoa butter helps keep stretch marks at bay both during and after pregnancy. Cocoa butter is high in fatty acids and hydrates the skin deeply, making it a wonderful addition to daily skincare. It contains oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids, all of which nourish the skin.

Macadamia Oil
Macadamia nut oil is rich in monounsaturated fats and an excellent source of Vitamin E, making it easy for your skin to absorb without feeling greasy. These fatty acids nourish the skin, help combat dry skin and lock in moisture. It mimics your skin’s natural oils, allowing you to maintain your natural glow.

Macadamia Oil protects your skin barrier and works hard to keep your skin firm. This protective skin barrier keeps out skin-damaging pathogens and potentially dangerous environmental factors. It contains high oleic, linoleic and palmitoleic acid, it’s been found beneficial in treating stretch marks, preventing chapping and reducing scars.
