Understanding Male Skin

Our skin is really important for the perception of health and beauty.

Knowledge of our skin physiology differences between the skin of women and men helps us develop a proper approach to properly take care of our daily skincare routine.

Male vs Female Skin

Skin Experts agree that there are structural differences between men’s skin and women’s skin. Different hormones are responsible for changes in male and female skin structure. Androgen (testosterone) stimulation causes an increase in skin thickness. A man’s skin is about 25% thicker than a woman’s. In addition to being thicker, a man’s skin texture is tougher.

Male skin sebum production

Sebum (oil) and its production also differ in both – men and women. After puberty, sebum production is greater in males than females, which is attributed to androgen secretions. For most people, changes in hormone levels trigger acne. These hormones create oils (sebum production is double that of women) that can lead to clogged pores, make pH levels lower which sometimes let bacteria grow, impurities and acne. All of these problems cause breakouts. Men whose fathers had severe acne are more likely to have it, too.  Because of sebum production, adult males are less prone to dry skin than adult females.

Ageing Male skin

Regardless of age, men have a higher density of collagen than women. Lucky, right? Because collagen content is directly related to the signs of skin ageing, it has been said a woman’s skin is about 15 years older than a man’s of the same age. The good news for women is that, once the signs of ageing appear later in male skin, but changes occur more quickly once they start. Men are most affected by sagging skin combined with puffy eyes and dark circles that make them look tired.
Male skin gets wrinkles too, though they are often less of a concern than for women. Male wrinkles occur later than female wrinkles but, when they do appear, they are fully grooved.

Shaving

This intense exfoliation of the outer skin layers through shaving can lead to a more youthful skin appearance. But it can also irritate skin and lead to more ingrown hairs or bumps if you’re not careful. On average, men who shave subject their skin to 16,000 shaves in a lifetime. Daily shaving stresses the skin and can cause irritation. It removes the uppermost layer of skin cells, exposing immature skin that is particularly sensitive to external influences.

Skin care for male skin

Because male skin is different to female skin, it benefits from a dedicated approach to skincare and from products that respect its unique biological attributes. Nimue Skin Experts want to focus on proper skincare routines not only for women but for men as well. Nimue created Nimue Man Range – a compact, easy to use range for men that deliver effective results and leave the skin healthy, refreshed and moisturised.

Daily skincare routine for Men recommended by Nimue Skin Experts:

Step 1: cleanse and shave
Shaving and facial cleansing is the most typical start to a man’s day and is the first area where they need to be correctly informed.

Certain shaving mediums can irritate the skin and make the hair follicle and skin swell, forcing the hair up and away from the skin, supposedly allowing for a closer shave, but some of the hair can be hidden by the swollen follicle and skin. Additionally, the swollen skin makes it harder for the stubble to find its way out. If the hair begins to grow before the swelling is reduced, the likelihood of ingrown hairs is increased.

Shaving advice

  • Apply Nimue Cleansing Wash to dampened skin.
  • Shave with the growth of hair rather than against it. However, for stubborn areas (cheek and neck) shaving against the growth might be necessary.
  • Ensure regular cleaning and replacement of blades.
  • For very coarse growth, soften hair with warm water (shower/bath prior to shaving) to allow easier cutting with blade. Avoid soaking too long or with too hot water, which can cause skin to swell and thus conceals hair root and results in partial shaving of the hair.

Step 2: hydrate
Shaving with a razor could abrade the skin, which results in a burning sensation when irritating ingredients are applied to broken skin. Apply Nimue Man Day & Night Cream which will restore the skin’s balance.

Step 3: protect
It is recommended that a Nimue prescribed SPF face product is used on a consistent basis to avoid photo ageing, environmental damage and development of skin cancer.

Step 4: soothe
Suitable after shaving, Nimue Man Treatment After Shave soothes, cools and moisturises in response to razor burn and dryness.
