Esse says, rewild your skin”
Esse & Co Beauty expands the catalog of the proposed products with Esse Probiotic Skincare cosmetics.
Trevor Steyn, founder of Esse Skincare, studied organic chemistry and completed a master’s degree in 1996. His mentor, prof. Siegfried Drewes, instilled in him a passion for studying the chemical compositions of African plants. After discovering the potential of some of these plants for skin care, Trevor founded his company.
Work on the products began in 2000 with research on Kigelia Africana, the African sausage tree. After two years of research, Esse Probiotic Skincare was born in 2002, the era of the beginnings of the development of ecological skin care products. In 2009, the company started its activity in the field of probiotic skin care. The early discoveries of the Human Microbiome Project began to shift the conventional view of skin, while Esse Probiotic Skincare began to see skin as the ecological human cells and microbial collection.
The process of incorporating this new vision into the development of Esse Probiotic Skincare products has begun, and the company is actively exploring the use of new probiotic species and delivery methods to help slow down the effects of aging and optimize skin health.
The brand’s mission is to create an environment for human skin that fosters the growth of beneficial microorganisms. Therefore, it uses prebiotics to selectively feed good microorganisms. In order to maintain a healthy skin microbiome, Esse as the only company in the world has developed preparations containing LIVE probiotic bacteria.
This approach is part of the rewilding concept – a novel answer to our very modern problems. It focuses on taking skin back to its roots and undoing the intervention of astringent skincare products.
Traditional skin care and treatments adversely affect the skin’s natural microbiome and deprive it of the beneficial bacteria that protect and nourish the skin. This manifests itself in the form of modern skin problems such as pigmentation, acne, rosacea, dehydration, and aging.
Products proposed by Esse Probiotic Skincare brand allow for the restoration of the skin’s microbiome to its balanced and ‘wild’ state through science and green chemistry. Essentially, rewilding the skin “is restoring the skin’s lost ecosystem and “seeding and feeding” the skin with nutrients to bring it back to life”, explains Trevor Steyn founder of the skincare brand.
The product range has been scientifically formulated for all skin types – with prebiotics, probiotics, and active ingredients to restore your skin to its best appearance. The proposed creams, peelings, masks, and lotions are made in South Africa according to international standards. All products are natural, organic and probiotic cosmeceuticals for skin care that contain probiotic extracts, as well as oils from African plants: Baobab, Marula, Kigeli, Aloe Vera, Jojoba oil, Kalahari, Rooibosa, Grape seeds, Palmarosa, Cumin, Rose Geranium, Mint, Yangu Manketti, Lavender and Rosemary.
The brand offers its customers four lines of professional products:
Probiotic and prebiotic active ingredients in organic preparations that nourish and protect the skin.
- Esse Sensitive (Now available on Esse&Co beauty)
Probiotic active ingredients in organic preparations that improve the barrier function, soothe, and heal reactive skin.

A new approach to acne using biotechnology and unique ingredients to minimize skin barrier disruption, soothe skin inflammation and restore a healthy microbial balance.
The brand does not believe in damaging the skin in the pursuit of short-term results.
Esse cosmetics optimize skin health to slow down aging in the long term, thanks to biochemistry that introduces beneficial changes in the skin microbiome. The pH of all products is kept at 5 using mild preservatives and rapidly biodegradable foams. In addition, the brand stays true to its core principles: it supports fair trade and is a certified organic, vegan, animal-free, carbon-neutral, and plastic-neutral company.
